When Words or Feelings are too Much

Harper Boege

I’ve gained many things from this class, mainly how to help someone through dance movement therapy and the power it has to help someone else. When I first started this class I had no idea what dance movement therapy entailed as I have never taken a dance class and this was outside of my comfort zone. Now looking back on it, dance movement therapy is a powerful way for people to be able to express themselves when words may be hard to use. DMT is an alternative or similar to art (like painting) therapy. I believe that this form of therapy is very beneficial to people to gain control of their body as well as express how they feel when words or feelings are too much for someone to express in other forms. I think it's beneficial to all age groups and every challenge someone may be facing. It is a cost free way to work out emotions and express yourself.

This learning in this class has been very different compared to previous classes I’ve taken before. My major in health sciences on the pre-PA track so I’m used to large lecture style classes that are not discussion based. The professors talk at you not with you so the learning environments are purely lecture based, which I got used to and comfortable with. This class however was a combination of lecture and application of discussion which I’m not really used to. In addition, this was out of my realm of comfortability, I am in no way a dancer or extrovert. I’ve played sports all my life. I was kicked out of ballet when I was younger because I am not a good dancer. So having to do group dances as well as individual lead dances made me really uncomfortable. But I took this class with my friends to do something out of my comfort zone which I am really happy I did because I learned a lot about myself and dance movement therapy in this class.

With all that being said I plan on becoming a Physician Assistant in the future and working in the Emergency Room or Military Medicine. I believe I can use dance movement therapy for myself and patients. I do enjoy going out and dancing with my friends till my feet hurt. I enjoy doing this when I need to relieve stress because it's a very cathartic experience. Sometimes you just need to dance the night away to get out all your emotions and have some fun doing it. So I can apply this to when I have a bad day at work and need to get out some heavy emotions so I can go dance. I can also use my knowledge to help patients by recommending this form of therapy if they are hesitant about different kinds. Knowing this is an option for patients is super beneficial because I can help provide patients the best care by knowing different kinds of options.

Gallivanting Throughout the Classroom

 Annia Ibarra

I never realized the profound effects Dance Movement Therapy has on mental health. In all truth, I had never heard of DMT before I was told of this class, and boy am I glad I did. Some of the things I learned were about the effects dancing has on your mind and mood, such as increasing endorphins and reducing anxieties. I think that in the world we live in, it is incredibly easy to keep on the hustle and bustle of life and never take time for yourself, but dancing and moving around is a small change that can lead to great benefits. Understanding your body can help you understand your mind. There are so many different strategies that can help you address your mental health with DMT, like Laban’s Cube for beginners, integrating visual arts with dance movement, and mirroring are a few things that I will keep in my repertoire for a really long time.

I have felt a full range of emotions throughout the class. I have felt stressed or worried, especially at the beginning of the semester. I was worried about people’s reactions or thoughts about me when moving around. I have felt happy when doing the exercises, whether mind-body meditations or gallivanting throughout the classroom copying each other. I have mainly felt relaxed and as though my body released tension that I didn't know was there. But overall, I was always excited to learn more and integrate the ideas into my life and the lives of my friends and family.

As you know, I hope to be a psychotherapist when I “finish” my academic journey. The reason I placed quotations around the word finish was because one truly never finishes learning, especially me. My goal is to never lose the strive for education and learning as much as I can about as much as I can. Being a therapist, one hope I have now because of this class is to learn as much as I can about DMT and hopefully get some sort of certification in it so I can spread the word and teach my clients. I would love to integrate it into my therapeutic practice so my clients can learn other strategies for understanding their bodies and understanding their minds while dealing with the trauma they have gained over the course of their lives. Another perk of learning more about DMT as I have said in the earlier paragraph is focusing and utilizing DMT knowledge to my benefit in applying it to my own life.

Healing, Empowerment, and Transformation

Margo Falack

Throughout my journey in the dance movement therapy class, I have gathered invaluable insights that exceed the boundaries of my academic learning. The class has not only provided me with a profound understanding of the therapeutic potential of movement but has also equipped me with practical tools to harness this potential. One of the key takeaways from the class is the recognition of the intricate connection between mind, body, and emotion. Through various movement exercises and reflective discussions, I have learned to appreciate how movement can serve as a powerful medium for self-expression, communication, and healing.

Emotionally, the dance movement therapy class has been a transformative experience for me. It has allowed me to delve deep into my own emotions, confront personal challenges, and develop a greater sense of self-awareness. Engaging in movement activities provided a safe space for exploration and expression, even though some exercises weren't the most comfortable, I know they had meaning to it and gave me insight on how to go about different emotions.. As a result, I feel more grounded, centered, and connected to myself and others. The supportive environment in the class has nurtured a sense of community and belonging.

Moving forward, I am eager to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired from the dance movement therapy class into my personal and professional life. As I embark on my journey beyond college, I envision myself incorporating many lessons from the class into various contexts, such as eye contact, body language, and even self-care practices. I believe that the principles of dance movement therapy hold immense potential for making a meaningful impact in the real world. By embracing movement as a therapeutic tool, I am committed to fostering healing, empowerment, and transformation in myself and others. I also plan on using some of these exercises to do with my grandmother that has Alzheimers. Hopefully this can help ease her mind a little bit

A Dynamic Learning Environment

Harper Goodman

My experience in the dance movement therapy class has been very enlightening, offering insights into the therapeutic power of movement and dance. One significant takeaway was learning about the Laban cube, which helped my understanding of body movements and their psychological implications. It helped my thinking and I developed a new lens to view human behavior, especially in therapeutic settings. Additionally, studying various dance movement therapists and their approaches, such as Marian Chace and her pioneering work in group dance therapy, revealed how dance can foster emotional, cognitive, and social integration. The diversity of techniques and theories explored in this class highlighted dance therapy's adaptability to different client needs, and I enjoyed learning about the power that it has in therapy.

The experiential nature of this class was both relaxing and impactful. Engaging physically through dance allowed for a dynamic learning environment that emphasized the body’s role in psychological health. I particularly enjoyed the active aspect of the class, which not only kept me physically engaged but also helped in embodying the theoretical concepts we were learning. This hands-on approach has deepened my understanding of how movement can be a powerful tool for expression and healing. It has been invigorating to learn about therapeutic techniques that prioritize bodily expression over verbal communication, which can sometimes be limiting. I have taken away many of the activities that we did in class into my personal life and schedule because of how beneficial it has been on my stress levels.

I am planning to attend dental school after I graduate. I recognize the high-stress nature of this field and the importance of maintaining personal well-being. The techniques learned in the dance movement therapy class are particularly valuable tools for grounding myself in stressful situations. Incorporating simple movement-based stress reduction techniques before exams or even during procedures when I am older could be highly beneficial. Furthermore, the empathetic and non-verbal communication skills developed through dance movement therapy can enhance my interactions with patients, helping to soothe anxiety and build trust. I plan to continue using these therapeutic movements as personal self-care practices, ensuring I remain balanced and centered throughout my life and future career.

 Bringing Up Real Emotions

Natalie Pemberton

When I first enrolled in this course I wasn’t sure what to expect. I have been pleasantly surprised by how fascinating I find the subject matter as it is so different from my major.  My main take aways are that movement is beneficial in everything. The mind body connection is essential to working to your best ability and dance movement therapy can be beneficial to anyone. It is specifically helpful for those who have a hard time expressing themselves, as well, which is a great fact to know and can be applied in any interaction with someone who has any mental disorder.

Having a sister who suffers from many of the disorders we have discussed and has been undergoing trauma therapy throughout the duration of the course, the experimental nature of the course was overwhelming at times. It was successful in mimicking what an actual session would be like, in turn bringing up real emotions. I am grateful for all I have learned in this course and enjoyed the hands on nature to understanding the concepts. Working with people who I am not as close to and wouldn’t have otherwise had the opportunity to connect with was very valuable. It also worked to our benefit during a lot of the exercises to increase their effectiveness.

This is definitely a course that many people could benefit from taking. The universal benefits of movement therapy are beneficial to be aware of even if only for our own emotional regulation. It can increase one’s ability to have interpersonal relationships and improve the way one goes about the world. I aim to travel and connect with people for the rest of my life and will use the teachings from this class all along that journey.

 Focusing on the Present.

 Madison Fox

I had many takeaways from dance movement therapy. One of them being self-awareness. Through many of the activities I participated in I learned to become more aware of my physical sensations, emotions, and thought patterns. Additionally, I learned to connect with my peers through movement, specifically, when we did an activity on mirroring each other's movements. Another concept I now understand better is presence. While participating in class activities I learned to focus on the present and not let my mind wander to past events or the future.

I loved the learning environment of dance movement therapy. I felt comfortable expressing myself freely due to the warm and inclusive nature of the environment. I deeply enjoyed participating in movement activities because I had never experienced a class like this one. This class allowed me to practice things such as mindfulness and self-awareness which I don’t usually get to experience in other classroom environments. Overall, the experiential nature of the class made me excited to come to class every week and experience new things.

The concepts I learned in dance movement therapy I now apply to my everyday life. For instance, I implement self-awareness on the daily by examining my emotions and understanding the events that trigger them. Furthermore, I practice focusing on the present moment when I am with my friends rather than stressing about upcoming exams or assignments I am required to complete. I often stress about school but after taking dance movement therapy I am working on focusing on the present. Lastly, I aim to form meaningful connections with those around me even if it may not be through movement.

Mental Health and  Well Being

Josie Shindler

After taking Dance Movement Therapy, I've gained profound insights into the transformative power of movement and body awareness on emotional and psychological well-being. One significant takeaway from this experience is the understanding that dance can serve as a potent non-verbal tool for processing and expressing complex emotions. Through exercises like mirroring and eye contact, I discovered a deeper connection to my own feelings and developed increased empathy toward others. The class highlighted how posture and movement patterns reflect internal states, which has heightened my awareness of body language and its role in emotional expression. Overall, this course has broadened my perspective on the therapeutic potential of movement and its impact on one's wellness.

Learning in this class was a highly experiential journey that initially presented challenges but ultimately proved immensely rewarding. Engaging physically in exercises allowed for a unique form of learning, distinct from traditional academic settings. Using dance as a mode of expression felt liberating, offering a departure from conventional verbal communication. The hands-on approach fostered a deep personal connection to the material and cultivated a supportive community within the class.

Moving forward, I intend to apply the principles of dance movement therapy to my academic pursuits in psychology. Dance movement therapy emphasizes the importance of changing one's mindset to be more positive and proactive. Through movement, individuals can shift their perspectives and cultivate a more optimistic outlook on life. I aim to explore how this transformative approach can be integrated into psychological interventions, focusing on enhancing mental health and well-being.

Supportive community Atmosphere

Avery Niedrowski

This experience has been both enlightening and transformative. Through the various sessions, I've learned the profound impact that movement and body awareness can have on emotional and psychological well-being. One of the most significant takeaways for me was understanding how dance movement therapy can be used as a non-verbal communication tool to express and process feelings that might be difficult to articulate with words. This was particularly evident in exercises that focused on mirroring and improvisation, where I found myself more deeply connected to my own emotions and able to empathize with others. Additionally, the class emphasized the importance of physical presence and the way posture and movement patterns can reflect internal states, which has made me more aware of my own body language and the messages I may be unconsciously sending.

The experiential nature of the class was initially challenging but ultimately rewarding. Engaging physically in the exercises allowed for a type of learning that was profoundly different from the more traditional academic environments I am used to. It felt liberating to use dance as a form of expression and healing, moving away from the typical constraints of verbal articulation. This method of learning through doing and feeling, rather than just listening or observing, fostered a deeper personal connection to the material. It also cultivated a supportive community atmosphere as we, as a class, navigated our individual and collective journeys through movement. Each session left me with a renewed sense of energy after a long day.

Looking forward, the insights gained from this dance movement therapy class will influence both my personal life and my academic pursuits. On a personal level, the techniques I've learned for self-awareness and emotional regulation through movement will be tools I carry into my everyday life, enhancing my interactions and personal relationships. I plan to continue exploring how the principles of dance movement therapy can be integrated into my life and to focus on holistic health and wellness practices.

 To be real and empathetic

Cirrafina Biele

Overall, I was surprised by how much I actually got out of this class. Initially, I thought it'd just be a fun way to move around, but it turned out to be so much more. It really opened my eyes to the mind-body connection and the incredible potential of dance movement therapy for people from all walks of life. Realizing how versatile DMT is and how it can benefit such a wide range of people was mind-blowing. Plus, the tight-knit community it fosters is seriously invaluable for anyone diving into this therapy. Learning about the power of expression through movement and how it can heal and empower individuals on such a deep level has left a lasting impression on me.

The experiential nature of this class was a refreshing departure from what I'd grown used to over the past four years. Unlike the typical routine of showing up, sitting, taking notes, and leaving, this format offered something unique. I found myself excited to attend each class, not just to learn about DMT but also for the chance to actively engage with its principles and tune into my body. Admittedly, stepping into this more interactive setting was a bit challenging for me in the beginning, especially since I tend to lean towards being an introvert. However, as the semester progressed, I gradually found my footing and grew more at ease, allowing myself the freedom to delve deeper.

I am graduating this semester with a degree in public relations, and while I did not see any connection over the semester, I found ways to apply for a DMT. Studying dance movement therapy has some surprising parallels with the world of public relations. It's all about learning to communicate effectively, not just with words, but with body language too, which is very important in PR. DMT also teaches you to be real and empathetic, qualities that can boost your relationships in the world of PR. Plus, it gave me some cool new storytelling tricks to make my PR campaigns stand out. Personally, DMT has helped me stay grounded and manage stress, which has been a lifesaver over my last semester of college and moving into the real world.

Unique ways of expression

Sue Laskowski

This class, dance movement therapy, has been truly one of the most enjoyable classes I have had throughout college. With the stress of college and my job at an eating disorder partial hospitalization program, I often feel very stressed and that I don’t have time to relax or focus on myself very often. This class has given me the space to move my body in unique ways of expression that I have never gotten the opportunity to do before. As I used to be a dancer myself it was nice to connect with my body in such a safe and open space with my peers.

This semester I am graduating with my BA in psychology. I am continuing my education with my master in social work (MSW) with a clinical specialization to become a therapist. Dance movement therapy has been impactful to my career path because there are many people who don't have access to traditional therapy, or even just want something other than talk therapy and it was very rewarding to experience having a class that was built on therapy and therapy sessions. I realized how important it is to combat your mental health from all areas of life, cognitively, emotionally, socially, etc. DMT gives the opportunity for those who are struggling to address their mental health and struggles through dance and movement where it is not necessary to talk. This can be very helpful to clients because some people may be fearful to talk about their struggles, may not know how to express themselves, have a difficult time being vulnerable, or even are just struggling in a way that is indescribable. DMT provides a safe therapeutic atmosphere where people can express themselves in a unique way that can express any thought, feeling, or emotion that one is struggling with.

One of the most impactful experiences I had in this class was when you (Dr. Morejon) did your expressive dance/movement about your life with the Hero’s Journey. I was actually very moved by it and have never seen such an expressive movement about one’s life before. This was also impactful because it encouraged me to open up about certain things that I have been struggling with in my personal life that have needed to be addressed but have been avoided from fear. Overall, this semester I learned that dance and body movement/expression can be so beneficial to many populations by using nonverbal expression. It is another form of therapy that has been very effective in treating many psychiatric and physical illnesses and DMT can be adapted to benefit any audience, even college students.

 Trying to Move Through Life

 Kit Blaney

Before taking this class I did not know the power that dance holds as a healing tool. Dance connects people no matter one's age, mental or physical state. I learned that dance movement therapy can help us relate to others through attunement and become connected to people through movement and allowing us to understand others more deeply. Dance movement therapy is an integration of the mind and the body. Movement can help all different kinds of people explore their thoughts and their body movements throughout the interconnectedness of dance. It also provides people an opportunity of self-discovery and exploration. It allows you to live out your emotions and feel them deeply.

During class, I found myself enthralled in the different teachings of dance therapy. I found it very moving that through dance one can discover a lot about oneself and about the others around you. Even
though I only knew a handful of the other students in the class, I felt very connected to the class when we were performing the dance movements (especially the mirroring exercises). A lot of the days when coming into class, I felt tired but through the exercises and the meditations I always left more relaxed and centered. At times, I felt uncomfortable as I felt like dance movement therapy was making me open up parts of myself that were undiscovered.

My biggest takeaway from class that I will apply to my life is the lesson of mindfulness.Throughout all these exercises and lessons in dance movement therapy I felt like the overarching theme in the class is mindfulness. Whether we were practicing mindfulness through meditation or mindfulness when trying to connect to others through exercises. At the end of the day we are all people just trying to move through life as it throws things our way and you never truly know what one is going through. So it is important to treat yourself and others with kindness. I am also going to apply some of the lessons and exercises that we practiced in class into my life. Learning to dance through pain and experiences to try to truly understand oneself.

 A Safe and Open Space

 Leyla Eslaquit

My experience with dance movement therapy has been nothing short of transformative. Each class was like opening the door to a new dimension of learning—beyond the bounds of my traditional studies. Professor Morejon's holistic approach to teaching, considering the whole person, resonates deeply with my aspirations in the medical field. His kindness and openness to each student, regardless of their background or abilities, have taught me the importance of embracing and respecting the individuality of those I will serve. His lessons remind me to approach each interaction compassionately, especially on challenging days.

The innovative structure of the class—merging lectures, discussions, and movement—aligned perfectly with my preference for visual and kinesthetic learning. Exploring individuality through movement in a field that often confines us to rigid structures has been remarkably liberating. I have learned to express myself in ways that standard science courses never allowed, and this expression of individuality is something I plan to carry forward into patient care. As an anesthesiologist, the connection and environment I create for my patients will be just as critical as the technical skills I employ. The principles of creating a safe and open space, akin to the therapist-client relationship in dance movement therapy, directly apply to my future practice. Ensuring that patients feel heard and understood before undergoing surgery will be part of the holistic care I aim to provide.

Maintaining eye contact was once a skill I once found challenging but now find empowering. The insights gained from this course have become an integral part of my educational foundation. They will inform my approach to patient care, emphasizing empathy, communication, and the understanding that every patient is a unique individual. The skills and perspectives nurtured here will be invaluable in my journey to becoming an anesthesiologist committed to delivering exceptional, personalized care.

 Guiding Myself Through My Emotions

 Topher Griffin

Overall, a takeaway I felt from this class is how much movement truly can help to change a feeling or an emotion. It doesn’t even need to be to music. I felt like I was able to truly see this from day one. I love how now throughout life I am going to use the things from this class to help me through any emotional situations good or bad. It was a way to truly express and guide myself through my emotions.

In the future I feel especially through stressful situations I am going to be able to use movement to relief it. I am going to be able to let go and let my body guide itself through the stress. I feel like with dance movement you are able to thoroughly let your body speak for itself. It feels so amazing after you are able physically show and tell how you are feeling through movements. I am done feeling embarrassed.

In addition, through what I learned in this course I feel that when applying the release of stress and tension through movement in my future career this will be helpful. Considering I am hoping to work in communications, I feel that between my interactions with others it will be important to use movement to further communicate and express. This is definitely a course that will help me further my potential in the communications world.

 More Awareness of My Body

Roshean Briones

Overall, this class has been very beneficial and I have learned many essential things that I would take with me throughout my life. This class has helped me meditate whenever I needed to destress or focus on something that was not school work or any other conflicts that I was going through. I feel more connected to my peers, especially whenever we do check-ins, or whenever we do a group activity during class. All the lectures that were taught in the discussion board were very helpful, detailed and easily understood. The guest lecturer was also great to work with and I definitely understand DMT better and how it can make an impact on every individual.

It was always very fun and interesting learning more in every lecture of this class. I have always gravitated towards reading the lecture posts on discussion board and how dance could be used as a therapy for patients. The videos shown during class were also very helpful in visualizing the type of movements discussed during class and have provided great real-life examples of patients that have benefited from dance movement therapy. The group activities were very engaging and it definitely enhanced the learning experience for the class. The activities have given me more awareness of my body and movements as well as the emotions and feelings of my peers.

Some of the most memorable exercises for me were the mirroring exercises, especially the exercise where each of us had to lead the class and do sets of movements that everyone had to follow. The meditation exercises were also very calming and relaxing to hear and follow. I also truly appreciated the professor’s hero’s journey performance. It was very touching to me and I can imagine the impact that performance had on others who were going through the same struggles.

I would definitely apply many of the concepts learned into my profession. I am majoring in psychology and obviously every lecture that we learned has incorporated therapy and mindfulness into dance movement. The group presentations were very interesting since it discussed psychological disorders and how DMT can be used for clinical settings. I’m going to nursing school after I graduate and work with many patients in the future, so I would definitely recommend dance movement therapy since I do believe it can truly help them.

DMT can help these patients showcase their inner emotions, improve communication skills, increase physical activity, and most importantly, improve their quality of life. I can also obviously use what we learned in class for my well-being and for whenever I need to meditate and calm down. I learned that therapy doesn’t just have to be sitting down and talking to a therapist; one can even dance or perform a few sets of movements to showcase their emotions and make others understand what they are going through. I truly appreciated this class and will remember it. Thank you so much professor.

A Sense of Trust Among Classmates

Alyssa George

Firstly, this course opened my eyes to the power of utilizing movement as a nonverbal form of expression in therapeutic contexts. Through various exercises and discussions, I learned how movement can serve as a gateway to understanding and expressing emotions, traumas, and subconscious thoughts. It was fascinating to explore how different methods such as Blanche Evan’s or Trudi Schoop’s, can elicit specific responses and how they can be used to facilitate healing and personal growth for different groups of people. Additionally, I gained a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection and how it relates to overall well-being. This course also emphasized the importance of nonverbal communication and how it can be utilized in therapeutic settings.

Learning in this class was both challenging and incredibly rewarding due to its experiential nature. Unlike traditional lecture-based courses, this class requires active participation and self-reflection. At times, it felt vulnerable to engage in movement exercises, such as the eye contact exercise, that encouraged us to learn to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. This vulnerability ultimately fostered a sense of trust among classmates, creating a supportive learning environment. By physically embodying therapeutic concepts, I felt more deeply connected to the material and gained a deep understanding of its impact.

Applying dance movement therapy principles to biomedical engineering offers promising avenues for innovation. By understanding how movement influences rehabilitation and well-being, there is potential for advanced technologies like sensor-enhanced prosthetics and neuro-feedback systems. This interdisciplinary approach also enables personalized medicine advancements, such as tailored rehabilitation programs and virtual reality therapies. By incorporating movement practices into my own daily routine, such as mindful walking, expressive dancing, or yoga, I can enhance my well-being and self-awareness. Personally, integrating these principles fosters a holistic approach to health in my own life through mindful movement practices.

Physical Connection Tool

Minze Li

I learned the function of dance therapy in healing different psychological barriers. It refreshes my old idea that only psychological counseling can be beneficial to mental issues. I learned different dance exercises that can help me to become relaxed and relieved. Such as, mirroring movement, which refers to when the therapist mimics the client’s moves to build up connection between them. The connection among body, mind, and brain is crucial for reducing stress and feeling relaxed.

I felt really relaxed after each exercise. I especially enjoy the exercise of creating choreography movements based on our past experience. I can build up a series of dance moves according to my sad emotion or depressive period of time. The supportive exercise allows me to feel my innate emotions and deep feeling. I felt much more relieved after this exercise. Other exercises also made me feel relieved and allowed me to forget some of the stress.

I will try to focus on my body’s feeling and be more aware of my inner deep thoughts. I will try to use the techniques in my daily life whenever I feel a sense of depression. Personally, this physical connection tool will help me to be more relaxed when I face strong barriers. And, it will help me to heal myself ever since I face the difficulties that cannot be solved by traditional communication method.

Stress Relief Methods

Kaiying Pei

In this class, I learned a lot of interesting and beneficial knowledge for my physical and mental health. Through dance therapy, I get to know my body more deeply and learn how to regulate and control the various parts of my body. At the same time, the dance therapy class provides a safe environment where I can freely express my emotions, stories and ideas. And I learned to dance to express my inner voice. Finally, in class, professor usually introduced some physical and mental health knowledge, such as emotional management skills and stress relief methods, which helped me better understand and cope with my physical and mental health problems.

In this course, I felt more relaxed from daily pressures. Compared to other classes with heavy academic work, I could always learn some knowledge about relaxing and managing emotions in this class. I'm a very anxious person. So, after learning this knowledge and realizing how it helped, I really appreciate it.

With the development of society, people's pressures from modern life will only get bigger and bigger. So, this course on dance therapy, I think, will play a very important role in my life. I will express and release my inner stress, anxiety, and depression through dance, and learn to deal with negative emotions positively. At the same time, I will also help myself to relax and reduce stress and tension through deep breathing, physical relaxation, meditation, and so on.

Just “Dance it Out”

Kate Adams

Going into this class, I knew little to nothing about dance movement therapy - or even dance in general. As a psychology major, however, I am interested in learning about different forms of therapy and counseling. My biggest takeaways from this class were that anyone can benefit from dance movement therapy, and that you do not need any level of dance skill to get the benefits from it. Additionally, I learned how dance can create a strong sense of community, which is especially important for clients struggling with psychological or physical conditions. The circle and kinesthetic empathy especially solidified this concept for me. Lastly, I learned a lot about myself through not only dancing, but the various other activities that we did - such as the hero’s journey and the drawing exercises.

I loved this class! I do best in experiential and discussion-based classes, as opposed to lecture-based classes. This is my last of four classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and it was really refreshing to have the opportunity to come to class and move around. I also believe that because of the experiential component of this class that I was able to learn much more effectively. It was really cool to learn about concepts, but also be able to physically try them. Often I was feeling tired when coming to this class, but I was always excited to come and felt energized and refreshed after.

As I mentioned, I am graduating this semester with a degree in psychology. I plan to one day obtain a Ph.D. in child clinical psychology. Children, especially those with mental disorders, can greatly benefit from dance movement therapy. In the future, I hope to be able to expand upon what I learned in this class to benefit my clients. Personally, I have been working on practicing mindfulness in my daily life and can incorporate what I have learned here into that! Lastly, I plan to remind myself that I can just “dance it out” when I am feeling overwhelmed.

 My Ability to be Self-aware

Andrew Kumble

I have had many takeaways from this course. First, I was able to gain an understanding of how dance and movement can be used to treat patients in a therapeutic setting. Through my understanding, I was then able to apply the concepts I had learned in the course to myself. This helped me strengthen my ability to be self-aware. Additionally, this course has made me a more confident communicator with others through activities like the eye contact exercise.

Engaging in this class, with its experiential learning approach, was deeply enriching. It created a profound appreciation for my body-mind connection. I felt that I had left every class with both a discovery and a personal journey. The group exercises were particularly transformative and allowed for an intimate exploration of self-awareness. I felt confident and excited to learn more about myself and others through the practice of DMT.

I can apply what I have learned in this course to various aspects of my life. Throughout the remainder of my time here at school, the skills that I have learned can help me to be more patient with others when working in group projects. In my personal everyday life, I can use mindful meditation to be more self-aware. Additionally, I can apply my knowledge of the importance of eye contact at future networking events. Lastly, I can use movement observation to help me create more nuanced interactions with others.

My Own Body and Movements

 Julia Weiner

Overall, I have found dance movement therapy an amazing class. Every day, I would come to class and be excited to participate and learn. One skill I feel that I have improved on in class is my ability to maintain eye contact. Before that lesson, I noticed that eye contact was something I sometimes struggled with to do for a long period of time. However, throughout exercises in class it is a task I have become more confident and comfortable with. Additionally, a main takeaway is that Professor Morejon showed me how to think about the whole person. I really admired how kind and open-minded he was to every single student no matter what. It was heartwarming to come to class to experience this type of attitude and see it in practice, so it has motivated me to always keep this in mind when it comes to all of my interactions even when I am having a bad day.

In this class, I thoroughly enjoyed the experimental nature of it. As someone who studies within the sciences, it was refreshing to have such a different outlook on the classroom setting. I am a visual learner, so I feel that having the lecture + discussion, leading into movement, was perfect. I also believe I was given the opportunity to explore my individuality within my own body and movements. This was even more refreshing because science courses lack the ability to express yourself.

In the end, I feel that I will definitely be able to implement my learning from this course in my future career. In the future, I hope to be a Physician Associate (PA). In this career, I will be providing care for patients, similarly to the relationship between the therapist and client in DMT. From learning about the relationship between therapist and client, I have learned that you must create a safe and open environment for them to express themselves and to provide adequate care. From all of our lessons, this concept was consistently touched upon. I feel that I have absorbed it well and hope to take these lessons and apply them to my exceptional care in the future.

Feeling Better than I Came In

Kayla Cassie

I’ve learned that dance movement therapy is a holistic approach to healing. It’s an excellent tool to get to know your body better and through that, heal whatever it is you need it to. I found it particularly interesting that DMT can be used as a solution or an aide for almost any issue from a stressful day to Parkinson’s disease. DMT is also a great way to connect with others and develop interpersonal skills. Through different exercises that we did in class, I was able to strength my eye contact and connect more deeply with those around me. Dance can be a form of non-verbal communication that helps understand and process emotions in yourself and others.

I had so much fun with the experiential learning in class. Almost every class felt like an actual therapy session and I feel like I learned a lot more about what DMT truly is through this than I would’ve by reading a textbook. By actually doing the exercises in class, I was not only able to learn but I was also able to apply it to what was going on in my life at the time. Every class left me feeling better than I came in. Every exercise left me feeling great.

My field of study is applied behavior analysis and I work with children who have various disorders. DMT can promote social skills and address sensory needs, specifically for kids with autism. Some children are nonverbal so DMT can become a type of nonverbal communication that the children adopt to express themselves. It also removes some of the rigidity within aba and can allow children to be more “free”. The group aspect of DMT can help children engage with others in a way that they’re not used to while simultaneously building social skills that many of these children lack.

More Productive and Harmonious

I gained a deep understanding of how our thoughts and emotions can be expressed through movement. It was eye-opening to realize the powerful connection between the mind and body, especially in the realm of psychotherapy. Exploring concepts like relationships, communication, and expression through dance exercises helped me see how movement can be therapeutic.

One of the most important lessons was creating a safe space for expression. Working with classmates in collaborative dance exercises built trust and a sense of community. Learning to pick up on nonverbal cues and connect through movement showed me how powerful embodied experiences can be in building relationships.

Moreover, the course highlighted the role of creativity and self-expression. Through improvisational movement, I discovered new ways to connect with my inner self. Embracing my unique movement style boosted my confidence both in class and beyond.

Learning in this class was unlike anything I've experienced before. It was immersive and transformative, diving straight into the practical side of things. Being able to embody theoretical concepts through dance exercises made the learning feel more tangible and real. Plus, the supportive environment created by the instructor and classmates made it easier to step out of my comfort zone and explore new movements.

In the realm of business management, the principles taken from this class can be applied in multifaceted ways to enhance leadership capabilities, team dynamics, and organizational culture. Recognizing that individuals' mental states are reflected in their bodily expressions can inform effective communication strategies within a business setting. By integrating movement-based exercises and team-building activities inspired by dance therapy principles, managers can cultivate a work environment grounded in trust, open communication, and collaboration. Furthermore, the incorporation of mindfulness practices and brief movement breaks can aid in stress management and foster employee well-being, ultimately contributing to a more productive and harmonious workplace culture.

Seeing Beyond the Words

Anita Rivelia

Dance movement therapy is one of the most valuable tools for psychotherapy. It has been linked to help patients process trauma, confront issues, and facilitate one’s own growth. Additionally, as DMT induces alterations in one’s consciousness, it is greatly beneficial for those who suffer from depression and anxiety.

My journey with DMT has truly been transformative and enriching. Prior to the beginning of the semester, I had no escape from stress caused by school. When we began the class, I was faced with challenges such as stepping outside of my comfort zone. I was able to overcome these challenges by the end of the semester and even began practicing DMT in my free time when I felt like the semester was becoming too much. This accumulation of things has positively affected my emotional and psychological well-being. Through the various exercises and discussions we have had in class, I learned how movement can serve as a potent tool for expression, communication, as well as my healing. I will never be able to live without it.

Lastly, I want to stress the importance of mindfulness and self-awareness cultivated through DMT. During my first ever mindfulness exercise I could not get past the first few minutes without getting sidetracked. I am now able to follow and complete a 10 minute mindfulness program daily and be present in the moment, in tune with my emotions and bodily sensations as well as enrich my understanding of self and others.

Overall, this class fostered an immense sense of community and connection among my peers. Because of our group activities, I felt like I was able to bond with others and truly see the power of human connection through movement. We were able to have a wide range of diversity in the class and each individual was able to express their uniqueness through DMT.

Moreover, DMT has allowed me to develop empathy and compassion for others as I learned to see beyond words and gain a deeper level of understanding which had never occurred to me before. Thank you so much for teachingus such a valuable life-skill, I wish you an amazing summer break and all the best!

My Awareness of Myself and Others

Wysh Anstine

I found Dance Movement Therapy to be a very insightful experience that expanded my knowledge of the relationship between mental health and physical movement. It’s amazing how dance therapy combines theoretical ideas with physical expression, giving us a hands-on way to investigate therapeutic approaches. My understanding of the many ways dancing can be a healing tool, especially in therapeutic and educational contexts, has greatly expanded as a result of this training. The career options this workshop showed for those of us interested in teaching and healing arts really piqued my interest since they provided insights into how dance therapy may be applied in various professional contexts. Overall, by increasing my awareness of myself and others via movement, the experiential learning technique has enhanced not only my academic experience but also my personal growth.

Due to the experiential curriculum in Dance Movement Therapy, learning has been both immensely rewarding and occasionally difficult. Dancing made the learning experience more intimate and powerful for me since it gave me a visceral connection to the course material. There were times when emotional expression on the body was raw and uncomfortable, but it was also a potent tool for healing and self-discovery. This practical method gave me a better understanding of the therapeutic effects of dance then could have been obtained from theoretical study alone. Using my body as a tool for healing and communication felt liberating and powerful, highlighting the importance of nonverbal communication in therapy.

Although integrating the concepts of Dance Movement Therapy into the commercial real estate industry may appear unusual at first, there are insightful methods that may be used to improve processes in the industry. First off, commercial real estate construction may gain a great deal from an awareness of the psychological and emotional effects of physical locations. This information could inform the creation of more useful and interesting locations that support productivity and well-being. This is crucial in settings like offices and retail stores. Furthermore, the empathic comprehension and communication abilities I’ve cultivated in DMT can improve relationships with clients and coworkers. Understanding non-verbal signs can help you negotiate better terms and build stronger customer connections. It can also make conversations more efficient and adaptable. Adding well-oriented features that are based on therapeutic methods can also make commercial properties stand out from the competition. This might include areas intended for rest and mobility, which draw renters searching for up-to-date, health-focused amenities and may also raise the property’s value. Finally, in competitive market, the creative problem-solving and inventive thinking fostered in DMT programs can inspire unconventional marketing approaches and property management solutions, thereby differentiating a commercial real estate expert.

Embracing Stillness through Movement

 Camryn McDonald

Taking this dance movement therapy (DMT) class was a transformative experience that fundamentally shifted my approach to thoughts and managing them. Each lesson emphasized the importance of various principles such as joining, attunement, and kinesthetic empathy, which helped me understand how movement and stillness are intertwined. The idea of mindful expression through movement was both liberating and enlightening, providing a therapeutic outlet that I hadn't experienced before due to the demanding nature of my majors in Computer Science and Math. The concept of embracing stillness through movement highlighted how being in tune with my body can facilitate mindfulness and attunement, offering a profound solace. This solace is not typically prioritized in the STEM field, where focus is often on innovative solutions rather than wellness. Yet, DMT provided a unique channel for me to center my thoughts and soothe the concurrent patterns that often permeate my mind.

Learning in this class was deeply enriching due to its experiential nature. Instead of being confined to theoretical discussions, we explored each topic by actively engaging in movement and stillness practices. This immersion helped us internalize the key DMT principles leading to authentic connections with ourselves and others. I felt a strong sense of community among my peers as we navigated this journey together, and the support of our instructor encouraged us to explore movement without judgment. The experience was freeing, as it allowed me to express emotions through my body in ways I had not previously explored. This deeper level of self-awareness ultimately brought me a greater sense of peace and balance.

Moving forward, I plan to integrate DMT principles into my daily life and share the positive byproducts with my fellow engineers, who sometimes overlook the value of mindful wellness in favor of innovative thinking and analysis. By emphasizing the importance of embracing stillness through movement, I hope to encourage others to prioritize self-care alongside their professional goals. This class taught me that by being attuned to our bodies and using movement as a form of mindful expression, we can cultivate a more balanced approach to managing thoughts and emotions, ultimately leading to improved productivity and creativity in our work.

Connected with My Classmates

Sophia DiMeo

During the course of the semester I have learned so many things about myself and my body that I never had thought about before. I am usually the type of person to bottle up all of my emotions until I absolutely need to share them. Dance movement therapy taught me how I am able to express my emotions through the movement of my body. The format of each class helped me to stay focused and learn much more, instead of having lectures the whole class we participated in multiple activities that we then had to write about once we finished each exercise. Our daily check-ins have made me feel much more connected with my classmates mostly because we all felt the same; “tired”, “stressed”, or “good”.

Each class we always learned new things, most of which brought me out of my comfort zone. I don’t usually try things like meditation or expressive body movement to share my emotions. Opening myself up to new ideas such as these made me appreciate dance movement therapy and my body even more. Activities such as the one where we had to go around the class and make eye contact with each other for a specific amount of time made me feel the most uncomfortable however it was where I felt more the most connected with my classmates and comfortable as the time went on. This is just one of the many examples that Dance Movement Therapy helped me create a much more positive and deeper connection with my emotions.

As I get ready to graduate from the University of Miami in just a few short days, I can confidently say that the tools I have learned from Dance Movement Therapy will greatly benefit me in my future endeavors. Going into the semester on the first day of class I knew nothing about DMT and honestly had no idea what I was doing to be getting myself into but now as we are coming down to the last few classes I am much more confident, willing to try new things, and expressive with my emotions. Going into the world of advertising it could get quite competitive at times and leave you feeling tired and anxious but I know that I can’t let that get to me and my emotions. If I feel pressure, stressed, tense, or just feel like a need to move my body I know I have the skills to properly and effectively express my emotions through movement.

New Forms of Self-expression

Lana Nesheiwat

Over the course of this semester, Dance Movement Therapy has been the mostmemorable class over my junior year. Being a finance student, I often forget what I learn in a class as soon as I am finished with the exam. One of the most important things I have taken away from this class is that the impact the courses we take during our college years should be as significant as the impact this course has had on me. I have learned more about myself and how my emotions and feelings can not only affect my mental being, but my physical being as well. I am now able to convey my feelings not only through verbal expression, but through art and movement and other forms of nonverbal communication that make me more comfortable to express myself. I was able to fully indulge into the class and be able to take away new forms of self-expression, not only for myself but also to help others, because rather than spending time doing homework assignments and studying vocabulary and definitions for an exam, I was able to take part in activities and learn hands-on how DMT can better a person’s well-being. Overall, not only have I finished the course with a better understanding of emotional expression for myself and others, but how hands-on learning is the most impactful way to indulge in a curriculum.

During certain exercises, such as the eye contact activity, I may have felt out of my comfort zone, and other exercises such as mirroring a partner or Laban’s cube, I felt perfectly comfortable. Regardless of my comfort in certain activities, I thoroughly enjoyed each one. Being able to learn hands-on and not only through watching videos or taking a test, I felt there was a valuable lesson for myself in each activity. As we experimented with each topic the course discussed, this nature helped me to comprehend more about how someone like myself can benefit from dance movement therapy. I also felt I was in a judgment-free zone in each class, as question or concern, my professor would never seem upset or annoyed to help myself or my classmates, and this is a crucial aspect of a safe learning environment when experimenting with Movement Therapy and apply it into this part of my life in various ways.

Finance can be extremely stressful, and I will most likely work a boring 9-5 in an office every day. This type of work environment can induce my anxiety, and remembering mindful body expression and breathing/stretching exercises we learned in this course can help me to level myself and become more aware of my body during times of panic. As I grow older and hopefully one day have kids, I also plan on doing a “check-in” with them as we do in class. After this course, I have genuinely learned how important it is to check-in on someone because you never know what that person may be going through, and I want to apply the therapeutic exercises we have learned onto my children so they can properly express their feelings to me, even when it is hard for them. There are many aspects of life where dance therapy can have a positive effect, and I am extremely grateful that I am now equipped with this knowledge so I can help myself and others.

 Getting Better Every Day

Blake Jacey

To be completely honest, I took a dance class because I heard it was easy, but it ended up being a much more positive and personally beneficial experience than I expected. The sometimes-awkward nature of exercises helped me counteract anxiety in my own life, and the therapeutic subjects of the course helped me navigate my own mindscape and emotions. My most potent takeaway/memory was Dr. Morejon’s performance for the class. It certainly was the most powerful moment of the semester. His dance was everything this course represents and strives to teach. The incredibly powerful story he told was in itself inspiring. The addition of movement invigorated the experiences he told us about tenfold. I’m not capable of doing many of the movements he performed, and I don’t think I’m confident enough. Dr. Morejon performing such with such raw power and conviction moved me and inspired me.

I am generally open to new experience, but like I mentioned in the prior question, I did not understand the experimental nature of this class. I assumed it centered around dance as a basic art form or exercise (which is certainly part of DMT), but I did not expect the therapeutic goals of the course. At first, there was some confusion and laughs seeing some of the videos of people in the industry and their work. As I began to do more of the work myself, I’m not sure as I was as committed as the professionals we studied. Slowly, though, I began to let go of my inhibitions and care less. Once I did this, I was able to reap more benefits of DMT than I had before, but I am still getting better every day. I hope to continue, and DMT helped set me on the path. I often feel that in my courses, everyone learns the same thing. Sometimes there’s a place for that, but I
want to learn about and get better with myself. DMT lets each student do learn about themselves, and each student’s takeaway’s are different.

There’s an undeniable social science to dance movement therapy. I’m sure some of the exercises are designed to enhance someone’s communication/social skills through their ability to align what a person feels and does. Striving to align these aspects of my person has been incredibly beneficial to my happiness and self-expression. In a course like this, one of the most limiting tendencies I noticed is caring what others think. You can never really dance if you’re worried about judgement. True expression comes from within, unadulterated by the pressures outside. And, of course, I must mention that the most obvious thing that struck me when I started DMT was that I was only one of a few guys. Since I’m mostly interacting with women while doing experimental exercises, it can be even harder to not care what anyone thinks. Learning to navigate these fears helped me in my own life greatly, and I notice they might even reduce my social anxiety in similar situations.

 Focus

Niya Williams

In this dance movement therapy class, I have gained a true appreciation for the role of focus in our lives, particularly as it relates to mindfulness. Through exercises like mindful walking, we were encouraged to focus on our breath, steps, and body, highlighting how central focus is in therapeutic sessions. This experience has underscored for me the importance of maintaining focus in various aspects of life, not just in therapy, but also in daily activities and interactions. Additionally, I have learned about the profound mind-body connection. The class exercises allowed us to explore how our bodies can reflect our thoughts, emphasizing the significance of body language in communication and expression. Through intentional movement, we learned to be more mindful and purposeful in our actions, a lesson that extends beyond the therapy room.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experiential nature of this class. Engaging in dance movement therapy exercises created a space for deeper understanding and personal growth. It felt like a safe environment where vulnerability was welcomed, fostering a sense of peacefulness and introspection. As someone new to therapeutic exercises, this class was an eye-opening experience. Dr. Morejon's calming presence and inclusive approach made each session enjoyable and enriching. The class became a highlight of my day, offering a reprieve from the stresses of school and life.

The lessons I've learned in this class, such as patience, focus, and stillness, are invaluable and applicable to my future endeavors, including my upcoming journey to law school. These concepts will help me maximize my potential and navigate challenging situations with a sense of calm and clarity. I was particularly inspired by your question about why we choose to do what we do when we could be doing anything else. Your authenticity and passion for your work have left a lasting impression on me, and I aspire to find a path that resonates with me as deeply as yours does with you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion with us; it has been a truly enriching experience.
